Half way for our relocation to the Cape.
On our relocation to our new home in the Cape we needed to night stop about half way from Richards Bay to Somerset West. We have two Jack Russels and had a trailer with a golf trike and bits and pieces. After a long drive through constant rain we arrived at the Barracks to be met by Mike who really went out of his way to find space for the trailer and settle the pooches. The accommodation was really good with lots of room , a very comfortable bed and bathroom. We were too tired to go to the dining room but had quick take sways arranged and then SLeeP. Awoke at 05.00 for tea and coffee provided and then prepared for the next leg of our trip to the new home. Mike was there to assist with the trailer and bid us farewell. It was a really good experience and we would love to return in more relaxed circumstances. Well done the "Barracks" team.

Pricy but worth a stay
The stay at the Barracks was surprisingly comfortable and the food was delicious. If you are staying more than once with limited time between stays, you may get the same meal but quality and tasty meals that satisfy the hunger and tease the palate. A great selection of wines, Single malt whiskies and a well stocked bar are incentive to arrive early. Run by a professional husband and wife team who have a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry, this is a definite recommendation for your half-way stop when driving from Cape Town to Jhb or PE to Pretoria etc.

They Go the Extra Mile!
We were looking for a waypoint between Joburg and Saint Francis Bay. What we found, delightfully, was comfortable and convenient accommodation from very hospitable and attentive hosts. Annalie and Mike. Rugby was tuned on the TV (knowing we were keen watchers), a delicious dinner was prepared to exact dietary requirements, and our hosts were genuinely interested in us and our mountain biking adventure. In the morning, we enjoyed coffee in our cozy, personal courtyard surrounded by intimate gardens and overhanging grape vines. This was followed by a yummy breakfast to order before we departed. It was such a perfect waypoint that we booked for our return from SFB to Joburg a week later. Again, rugby was tuned on the TV, immediate miscellaneous requirements were catered for easily, dinner was to lovely yummy order, and our personal courtyard coffee spot in the morning was inviting once again. Cooked to requirements, our tasty breakfast got us energized for the trip back to Joburg. To boot, they are pet friendly for a future stay with our three dogs. Thanks again Annailie and Mike! We'll be back!

Historical gem
I arrived relatively late in the evening to a very warm welcome by Mike & Annelie. Charming and interesting hosts whose establishment is delightful, steeped in history, and which has a quaint little pub with some excellent single malts. Being off the main street of town meant a perfectly quiet night, in luxurious bedding yielding a deep sleep. After a good breakfast I was on my way, refreshed and ready for the day's drive. I look forward to another stay.

Better than the Waldorf! Pet & Vegan Friendly
We arrived late and tired, but Mike and Annelie warmly welcomed us and our dogs and made sure we were all settled into our spacious, spotless room - with it's private, pretty courtyard. After a long drive, what a pleasure to have a hot bath, comfortable, king-size bed, fluffy gown and slippers, not to mention tea/coffee and fridge :) Annelie went out of her way and prepared a delicious hot Vegan breakfast for me, while Mike was the perfect host and made sure everything else was perfect - I could easily have stayed an extra night! Definitely the place to stay in Colesberg!

Stopover that is well worth it!
We have stopped over at The Barracks many times in the past 10 years, and although Dave has sold and moved on, but Mike and Annalie have maintained all the traditions and have upgraded the rooms! As a stop over point you cannot go wrong .... we will be back on our next trip through Colesberg!

Wonderfull stay - Vegan and Pet friendly
On arrival we were met with the legandary Karoo hospitality. We were shown around and felt at ease, we were shown the coffee and tea facilities and were told to make ourselves at home. Our cabin was spacious and homey, equipped with everything that we needed for our stay. There was enough blankets on the bed for the cold night ahead and just in case, the heater was set to start heating our room even before arrival. In the bathroom I was met by a fluffy robe and slippers after taking a long soak in the footed tub. But my biggest amazement was when we arrived for dinner that night. A nice warm vegan meal awaited me. I was so suprised because it is quite difficult to find any establishment catering to the vegan friendly. I would recommend The Barracks to anyone with a allergy or restriction, or just wanting to live your life a a vegan. Oh, and they're pet friendly too. So, travelling with a dog or cat is no problem.

Jailhouse Rocks
We love the Barracks and have stayed there numerous times. New owners Annalie and Mike have spruced the rooms up with new linen, bathrobes and slippers. As always the welcome is warm, the food delicious and there is a great selection of wines. A great place for a peaceful sleep before embarking on the next leg of our journey. Another plus is their dog friendly rooms - our mutts also love staying there and Alex one of our males has fallen in love with Lumi the resident husky.

A Karoo gem
Going from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Knysna, Plettenberg - you definately need a break halfway, and what nicer place than The Barracks in Colesberg will be hard to find. The Kings grants you a very warm welcome and accomodates you in lovely wellapointed twinroom/double roms with own en suite bathrooms incl all needed ammenities sich as bathropes and slippers. Can highly recommend to book dinner in advance. A lovely 3 course homemade dinner will come your way, most likely with a hearty Karoo Lamb dish as main, what else to expect ? By the way, the wine list is splendid and the selection of Brandies and whiskies are excellent. After a quiet and good sleep, a good breakfast is awaiting you before hitting the road for your next destination. A true gem in the Karoo, we will definately be back for more.

We want to stay here again and zagain!
Owner Mike met us at our car on arrival, assisting us to carry our things in. After a congenial explanation of the premises, we relaxed in the antique chairs in our room. The dinner was superb, just what we had requested by phone. Dinner by the cozy fireplace, a nice warm bath, and a heated room, made our evening such a nice stay. Breakfast was also perfect in every way. We lacked for nothing while here.

"Great stopover in the Karoo"
Our overnight at the Barracks was made so much more pleasant by the warm hospitality of Mike and Annalie. Good food and the cosy, well appointed room just rounded it all off. We will definitely stay there again. - Patrick K
